I'll give it to you, Charlie.

Answer:  Measure the distance between the top two bolt holes on the bell housing.  The bolt holes on small block tranny cases and bell housing are 7-3/4" center-to-center and on big blocks are 6-7/16" center-to-center.  The 1-5/16" difference is noticeable to most people if they know what they're looking for.
