Well....it was an option on my '73 motorhome (and mine does have it)....
Bingo.  The bugs were worked out in 1972 and was available as an option on some vehicles that year.  It became standard in 1973 on most vehicles.  (Reports often state "all" vehicles but bear in mind most reports only consider cars and light trucks while ignoring motorhomes and heavier trucks.)
